2-Day Akagera National Park Adventure Itinerary
Rwanda Treasure Tours
Rwanda Treasure Tours offers a carefully designed 2-day safari experience to Akagera National Park, Rwanda’s only savannah park and home to the Big Five. This itinerary combines game drives, wildlife viewing, and a boat safari on Lake Ihema, giving travelers a full experience of Rwanda’s rich wildlife and natural landscapes.
Day 1: Kigali – Akagera National Park and Afternoon Game Drive
The journey begins early in the morning with pick-up from Kigali between 6:00 and 7:00 AM. Guests travel east through Rwanda’s beautiful countryside, characterized by rolling hills, rural villages, and scenic landscapes. The drive takes approximately 2.5 to 3 hours before arriving at Akagera National Park.
Upon arrival, visitors complete park registration and receive a short briefing before starting the safari experience. The adventure continues with an afternoon game drive through the southern part of the park. This area is known for its diverse habitats, including savannah plains, woodlands, lakes, and wetlands. During the drive, guests may encounter wildlife such as elephants, giraffes, zebras, buffaloes, antelopes, hippos, and a wide variety of bird species. With some luck, predators like lions or leopards may also be spotted.
In the evening, guests proceed to their lodge for check-in, dinner, and relaxation. Lodges around Akagera offer peaceful surroundings with views of the savannah or nearby lakes, creating a perfect atmosphere for rest after the first day of safari activities.
Day 2: Morning Game Drive, Boat Safari, and Return to Kigali
The second day begins with an early morning game drive at around 6:00 AM, the best time to observe wildlife when animals are most active. This session takes guests through different sections of the park, offering a chance to see predators returning from night hunts and herbivores grazing in the soft morning light. The sunrise over Akagera’s open plains provides excellent photography opportunities.
After the morning drive, guests return to the lodge for breakfast and a short rest before checking out. The next activity is a boat safari on Lake Ihema, one of Akagera’s highlights. During the boat cruise, visitors can observe hippos, crocodiles, and a variety of bird species such as African fish eagles, herons, and kingfishers. This peaceful water experience offers a different perspective of the park’s ecosystem.
In the afternoon, the journey continues with a drive back to Kigali, with optional stops for photography or souvenirs along the way. Arrival in Kigali is expected in the late afternoon, marking the end of the safari experience.
